What is a rotary switch?

2022-01-05

The rotary switch can be used to replace the rotary pulse generator with the analog function of the traditional resistance potentiometer. Rotary switches are usually used in the front panel of the instrument and the human-machine interface of the audio-visual control panel, using a quadrature optical encoder to replace the pure digital device of the analog potentiometer. The appearance of the rotary switch is similar to that of a traditional or resistive potentiometer, but its internal structure is completely digital and uses optical technology. There are two quadrature output signals (channel A and channel B), which can be directly connected to the encoder processing chip.

Rotary switches are mainly installed on liquid and gas pipelines to adjust the flow and pressure of liquid and gas. When in use, rotate the handle to drive the adjustment nut to rotate and pass to the left. Screw the thread to the left of the valve. Screw thread connection to drive the valve to move to the right or left to change the cross-sectional area of the right hole passage in the valve body cavity to adjust the liquid and gas flow and pressure in the upper outlet pipe.

The rotary switch controls the on-off of the main contact by rotating the handle. It has two structural forms: single-pole unit structure and multi-pole multi-position structure. Single-pole unit rotary switches are usually used together with rotary potentiometers, and multi-pole multi-position rotary switches are mainly used to switch working state circuits.

Common band switches and multimeter shift switches are rotary switches, which have two structures: one is BBM contact type and the other is MBB contact type. The former is characterized in that the movable contact first disconnects the front contact and then connects to the rear contact when changing positions, and there is a state in which both the front and rear contacts are disconnected. The latter is characterized in that the moving contact has a state of contact with both the front and rear contacts when changing positions, and then the front contact is disconnected to maintain contact with the rear contact. In the circuit design, the rotary switch should be selected according to the purpose of the circuit and the safety of the circuit.

What kind of switch is a rotary switch? I will introduce it here for the time being, I hope it will be helpful to you.
